A special cell to deal with cyber and economic offences will soon be launched in the city. The set-up of the cell has been finalised under the newly-introduced commissionerate system.
"The cell will be headed by an officer of deputy SP rank whose appointment is under way," said Jaipur police commissioner B L Soni.
The cases falling under cyber and economic offences are registered at various police stations in the city under the IT Act. All the cases will now be transferred to the new cell. The police department is at present segregating the data at administration level.
Establishment of a dedicated cell would help police to provide and seek information and support from other centres. At present, the investigating officers have to wait for long due to pending administrative clearance for requesting information from the IT companies.
"The mobile service providers have nodal officers at state level, however, communication with server companies outside the state and country remains a difficult task. The new cell will provide a better channel for information," said a police officer.
According to police, most small-level cyber offences in the city are related to internet lottery while incidences of hackers withdrawing money from electronic banking is also on the rise. Credit card frauds also are a common offence.
"Despite the rising trend, there is not much awareness among policemen about the IT Act. Many cases which are related to cyber fraud get registered under common fraud," said a police officer.
