Fed: Amendments to controversial food standards code

Imported foods will be subject to the same labelling requirements as those produced
locally under a proposed amendment to the food standards code.

The Australia New Zealand Food Authority says food groups have proposed a number of
amendments to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.

ANZFA is calling on the public and interested parties to submit comments on the amendments.

The three proposed amendments are:

- An exemption from labelling requirements for spirits and liqueurs destined for duty free sale;

- The closure of a legal loophole used by some manufacturers of fermented meat products
to avoid cooking requirements; and

- A requirement that food imported into Australia be subject to the same labelling
requirements domestically produced food.

Any submissions on the proposed amendments needed to be in to ANZFA by March 14, 2001.
