Fed: Hercules dumped flares coming into Baghdad with aid
An Australian Hercules aircraft carrying urgent medical supplies has had its earlywarning system activated while flying into Baghdad International Airport.
Australian Defence Force spokesman MIKE HANNAN says the crew and special forces commandoson board to provide security noticed flashes in the sky as they came in to land.
He says the early warning system was activated and flares were launched as a precautionarymeasure -- but there's no evidence that the aircraft was targeted by a missile.
Brigadier HANNAN says electromagnetic radiation can trigger the early warning system.
The commandos fanned out to provide a defensive perimeter as almost 7,000 kilogramsof stores were unloaded.
The plane kept its propellers turning and was on the ground for about 15 minutes.
The supplies -- some donated by the United States and Kuwait -- were lifted off HMASKanimbla in the Persian Gulf.
